Police: Florida boy drops loaded handgun inside pre-kindergarten class

Florida police are trying to figure out how a 5-year-old boy came into possession of a loaded handgun that he dropped inside a pre-kindergarten class.

A female pre-kindergarten teacher at Moseley Elementary School in Palatka was giving a music lesson Tuesday morning when she noticed the small, .22-caliber handgun fall out of the boy's pocket, Assistant Police Chief James Griffith said. The firearm did not go off, and no one was hurt.

But the boy, along with the gun, were promptly brought to school administrators. They alerted school security and police at 9:25 a.m., having determined that there was no immediate danger to the school, which is in Palatka in northeastern Florida.

"The boy is both initially a suspect in this thing, but also a victim," said Griffith. "This is very rare."

The boy told authorities that he found the firearm inside the vehicle that he had come to school in -- one which Griffith said belonged to the youngster's stepfather. Neither the boy nor stepfather have been named, the assistant chief said, in order to protect the identity of the child, who is a minor.

Police say they have no indication that the boy made any threats or showed the weapon to anyone during his 30 to 45 minutes in school before the incident.

"There was nothing that transpired, as far as threats, showing the weapon off, anything like that," Griffith said. "At this point, we are trying to determine where the child got the gun from, and if any adult was negligent in allowing him to gain access (to it)."

The student was immediately suspended and barred from coming on school grounds pending the outcome of the investigation, while the state's Department of Children and Families is also looking into the case.

Putnam County Schools Superintendent Tom Townsend told CNN affiliate WJXT that the problem extends well beyond the youngster.

"This isn't the fault of the 5-year-old," Townsend said. "Someone is responsible for leaving a gun where a 5-year-old can access it, and that's a tragedy and it's inexcusable."

The police investigation could take "anywhere from weeks to months," the assistant chief said, while authorities look at evidence and conduct interviews. The boy's youth isn't much of a complicating factor, with Griffith saying that he "seems intelligent (and is) able to communicate well."

"You're trying to verify their version of what occurred," Griffith said of the child and others central to the case. "Do we have any witnesses to back up what they're saying, those types of things."

While authorities are investigating the case as a serious matter, they're also thankful that it did not turn out worse.

"That's what you always worry about, when a child gets their hand on a gun and its loaded," Griffith said. "The chances of an accidental discharge and someone getting shot by accident -- it's not good."

McDonald’s Slated to Offer Ultra-Cheap McWeddings
Starting in 2011, couples in love will be able to tie the knot at any McDonald’s branch in Hong Kong.

Slated to begin sometime in January, the upcoming McWeddings will first appear for a test period at three major McDonald’s branches. They’ll be offered in packages starting at HK$1000 ($129), which is a major savings from the typical HK$10,000 or $1,300 price of a Hong Kong wedding.

Included with the reservation is a personalized menu, decorations, McDonald’s-themed gifts, a special apple-pie wedding cake, and a lone fry in place of the traditional cherry a couple shares prior to kissing.

It’s essentially an ultra-cheap and fun way to get married. It’s kind of like an American couple getting married in a Las Vegas casino. Similarly, there are a couple striking caveats. For one, couples who opt for a McWedding aren’t guaranteed any privacy whatsoever. Other customers who walk in to grab a bite are welcome to watch the ceremony. In addition, McDonald’s doesn’t carry any liquor or beer, so there’ll be no drinking.

This whole fiasco all all started when a couple who originally met at a Hong-Kong-based McDonald’s decided to get married there. The word quickly spread, prompting couples all across the country to call into McDonald’s asking to make a reservation for their own wedding. Thus a trend was born.

It’s not the most romantic idea in the world, but it certainly is cheap. More importantly, you get a bunch of free Happy Meal toys with it. And well, there’s nothing quite playing with your toys while naked at your honeymoon.

The Green Bay Packers team picture controversy is still not going away, as tight end Jermichael Finley has now joined linebacker Nick Barnett in taking to Twitter to say quarterback Aaron Rodgers was wrong to criticize injured players who didn’t rehabilitate in Green Bay.

Immediately after Barnett hit back at Rodgers on Twitter, Finley weighed in with a tweet of his own, siding with Barnett: “@nickbarnett TRUE FACTS RIGHT THERE.”

A few hours later Finley added, “For my followers that want to know why im rehabbing in AZ, bc I get the top of the line training. Its YOTTO folks. Think before y’all speak. Fans listen, I love u all, and have been working my tail off 5 hrs a day since I have arrived in Arizona. I love the packers. Everyone in the NFL knows that this is a business and if I don’t take care of my body to be Best player than I can be, then I won’t even be around to win a Super Bowl in the future. I’m a packer for life, AROD is my guy!”

It’s amazing that something as seemingly trivial as a team picture has become a source of such controversy this week, but these are the things that happen during the week off before the Super Bowl. And every player on the Packers needs to know that every word he speaks (or tweets) on the subject will be amplified by the thousands of members of the NFL media who don’t have much else to write about this week.

White Captures X Games Gold

At the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, defending champ Shaun White won again in the superpipe. This was White’s fourth consecutive victory in X Games competition. White is also a two-time Olympic champion in this event.

White told ESPN, “I figured it was all or nothing. I knew I needed to stick the best run and went for it.”

He beat out Scotty Lago using his signature Double McTwist 1260, in which he launches himself and does two head-over-heels flips with three-and-a-half rotations. This maneuver is so dangerous that only a few have attempted and successfully completed the trick.

Lago was competing with a broken jaw, but he still managed to win silver. Louie Vito came in third for the bronze.
